FUNCTIONAL SKILLS TUTORING

Who is this service for?

  • College students or apprentices needing a maths qualification for future work.

Functional Skills Maths often provides a more flexible and practical route towards gaining a recognised maths qualification for employment, apprenticeships and further study.

  • Adults returning to education/did not originally achieve GCSE maths.

Lessons are friendly, supportive and tailored to an adult’s starting point, helping them rebuild confidence step by step, regardless of how long it has been since they last studied maths.

  • Home educated students taking a flexible approach to maths learning.

Students who are not on roll at a school prefer an approach to mathematics learning with manageable learning steps to ensure they are motivated, happy and enjoying their mathematics learning at a pace that suits them.

What is Functional Skills Maths and why choose this instead of GCSE?

Functional Skills is a nationally recognised qualification. It develops the practical skills of mathematics in the workplace and everyday life which may appeal to learners who originally found the GCSE Foundation maths format difficult. For many learners, it provides a flexible and relevant pathway to achieving a recognised maths qualification.

What does a lesson look like?

  • After an initial chat regarding current college levels or any recent assessments, we undergo an assessment     of strengths and gaps.

  • Learning gaps are then identified and addressed as soon as possible to ensure the pupil begins to feel confident in their mathematical ability.

  • Once knowledge and skills have been practised, exam questions – in various formats and guises - are     shown and modelled to help the student understand how to approach exam techniques.

  • In addition, practice papers and questions can be worked through as additional homework if required.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS TUTORING

Do you teach Functional Skills Level 1 & Level 2?

Yes, we teach both Level 1 & Level 2.

Usually, we undertake an assessment and initial discussion to determine the best route to take.

What is covered at Functional Skills?

  • Number
  • Measures
  • Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
  • Ratio
  • Money
  • Time
  • Data Handling
  • Real-life and Practical Problem Solving

Can lessons fit around work or college?

Yes, we would do our best to accommodate gaps in the week to ensure the student can attend weekly tutoring sessions.

How quickly can I pass?

At mastrellimaths, we focus on clear explanations and ensuring learners understand the skills before applying them to problem solving question. As every learner is different, we go at a pace that suits the learner.

Tutoring alone will not necessarily be enough. Additional practice – either as homework or self-study – will greatly increase a learner’s chances of passing the Functional Skills Maths examinations.
